Health Science Foundations is part of the Secondary Health Core designed to provide the student with an in depth knowledge of the health care system and associated occupations. Emphasis is placed on communication and interpersonal skills, use of technology, ethics and the development of critical thinking and problem solving skills. Students will also learn first aid skills and demonstrate the measurement of vital signs. The fundamentals common to all health care occupations are presented to create a foundation on which learners can build when they take specific occupational courses. The topics are appropriate for occupations that involve direct patient care, such as nursing and dental assisting, as well as those that provide support services, such as health information technology and pharmacy technician (Mitchell & Haroun, Introduction to Health Care, 3ed).
